Active breaks in the office help reduce neck pain and lower back pain

Author: Richie Sanchez (Ricardo Sanchez) B. Health Sc./B. Appl Sc. Chiropractic (RMIT)

Did you know that taking active breaks in the office can help reduce the new onset of neck pain and lower-back pain? Neck pain ranks fourth as the most common musculoskeletal disorder worldwide, with lower back pain ranked first.

For many office workers, a typical workday is characterised by desk-based work, which entails several hours of sitting. Prolonged sitting has been found to increase musculoskeletal discomfort over time, particularly in the neck and lower back.

A 2021 study suggests that active breaks (eg, standing up, walking around office) and postural shift interventions can effectively reduce new onset of neck and lower-back pain in office workers. If you suffer from neck pain and/or lower back pain then its time to speak to a chiropractor.
